The Michigan Elks Field of Honor at Alma Lodge #1400 had 214 flags flying this year from May 3, 2021 to July 14, 2021. There were 13 Lodges that had a flag representing their Lodge. We are hoping that all Michigan Lodges will have a flag representing their Lodge next year.
There were about 200 in attendance for the dedication on May 3rd. The Military flags were brought in by the Forgotten Eagles on their motorcycles and passed off to personnel that placed the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, EMS/EMT, Police and Fire Departments and the MIA/POW flags in the Military field. The Alma VFW Post performed the 21 Gun Salute and taps.
The 214 flags were announced individually and placed in the Field by the purchasers (if present) with help from area Boy Scout troops, Ithaca National Honor Society students and Alma Lodge officers. Lunch was served before the ceremony. The ceremony concluded with all attendees standing and singing “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood.
If you have never attended the dedication, please set aside time to experience this awe inspiring event next year at 2pm May 1, 2022. Lunch will be served from 12-1:30 before the dedication ceremony. This will be the 17th year for this event. The 2022 Field of Honor Special Honorees will be Education Personnel – teachers, professors, aides, office workers, custodians, bus drivers, kitchen staff, etc.
As stated earlier, we would appreciate it greatly if all Lodges would set aside $20 to be represented in next year’s Field of Honor. When the Field is dismantled on June 14, 2022, each Lodge will receive their flag, pole and tag to take back to their Lodge.
Flags for individuals will still be $25 and the purchasers will receive their flag, pole and tag when the Field is dismantled.
